“At The Urban Hound, we believe that reading can bring joy and wonder to our lives and that every child deserves to be able to read and to see themselves in the books they read. Family support is critical to this lifelong journey. You may ask yourself, “What does a dog store have to do with reading?”.  Well, we know that dogs reduce stress and they happen to be good listeners. Reading to a dog may improve reading abilities and can increase a child’s self-esteem and confidence in their reading. We also know that the more you read, the better you get at it. For some kids, reading aloud can be stressful and overwhelming. A calm dog can be the perfect captivated audience for practice.

The Urban Hound is partnering with The Center for Literacy and Learning and its Family and Community Engagement Program,  Louisiana Reads! to offer an engaging way for your children to practice the essentials needed to strengthen their reading skills. The goal of Louisiana Reads! is to help bridge the gap between at-home learning  and classroom Instruction  and encourage families to read more and build their home libraries.

Ruby, the Vizsla loves to be read to and will be hanging around for some sweet pets and kisses. Enjoy reading time and fun literacy games then leave with a free book to read with your family. Stick around Perkins Rowe after the event for Santa Rocks the Rowe! It’s sure to be a blast!
